This report is the culmination of our work with the We are Ocean community over the last 12 months.
Our aim has been to better understand what the community looks like now, how community members are engaging and what a collective vision for the community might look like.
For this project we worked alongside members of the We are Ocean community, All the Elements founder Soraya Abdel-Hadi, illustrator Jasmine Hortop & designer Caro Weisberg. Much love also goes to Dan Burgess & Sue Ranger, two of the original We are Ocean founders for their support & insights throughout.

Find the information you need quickly while developing new messaging or revising existing messages; Better understand the mindsets of diverse audiences who love the ocean and are willing to take action to support it; and understand the research behind our recommendations on how to develop effective messaging to motivate target audiences to take action.

During the recovery phase of COVID-19, the challenge will be how to sustain a green recovery and effectively communicate the need to address other crises, such as the climate emergency and the rapidly degrading ocean. This paper sets out an evolution of the narrative to put the ocean centre stage in such recovery processes.

The David and Lucile Packard Foundation works with partners to ensure the long-term health of the ocean by investing in country-level and global strategies that help improve our ocean’s sustainability.
To better engage citizens and governments alike, the Foundation partnered with Kantar to conduct a robust public opinion study of people’s perceptions on the ocean and related environmental issues in six Pacific Rim countries where the Foundation supports work to promote ocean health: The United States, China, Japan, Indonesia, Mexico, and Chile.
